Say NO to Smoking....

Why Smoking Kills

All of us are aware of the harmful effects of smoking on our health and the environment around us. Each and every part of our body gets affected by smoking. In very simple words we can say that smokers are pushing themselves to death. Smoking produces 4,000 poisonous substances. When inhaled, they cut down the oxygen supply to the heart thereby damaging the circulatory and the respiratory system. Nicotine, is an addictive drug which is present in cigarette.

“Cigarette Smoking Is Injurious to Health” This is a common line that we can see on every cigarette packet which indicates that its harmful but still we continue using it. It not only causes pollution but causes health hazards too. It is one of the main cause many harmful diseases. The smoke of a burning cigarette is really very dangerous. Not only the smoker is in danger but the other person who is standing nearby him inhaling the smoke is also at the same risk. This is called Passive Smoking which is also known called Second hand smoking. This is more harmful than the Active smoking ( the person who smokes himself). Smoking of any kind whether active or passive, it is always better to avoid smoking altogether.

Now a days not only men, even women seem to be addicted to smoking. According to the WHO's 14th World Conference on Tobacco and Health, 2009, there has been an alarming 18 per cent rise in the number of women smokers in India. It is suspected that every eight seconds, someone in the world dies due to tobacco use. Every cigarette smoked cuts at least five minutes of life on average about the time taken to smoke it.

Effects of Smoking

Smoking is a prime factor in causing heart disease, stroke, chronic lung disease, tuberculosis. It can even cause cancer of the lungs, larynx, esophagus, mouth, and bladder, kidneys. It has harmful effects like cough, headache, soreness of throat, dizziness, irritation in eyes, bad breath, yellow teeth, wrinkles.

The main risk of passive smoking is to small kids, lungs, heart, brain, pregnant ladies and their inborn baby also. Smoking should not be done at the time of pregnancy as it may cause side effects to the babies with malformations and low birth weight.

Tobacco is Injurious to Health

Recent studies has showed that Tobacco is very injurious for health. Chewing tobacco leads to mouth cancer. People now-a-days opt to smoke cigarettes in order to fight stress. Tobacco is a poison, which kills slowly and steadily. Every year, smoking kills more than 276,000 men and 142,000 women. Anti Tobacco Day is celebrated throughout the world on May 31st to create awareness about the harmful effects of chewing tobacco. Tobacco is an addiction, which destroys our young generation, thus spoiling the future of our country. It causes many harmful diseases and is very injurious to health.

If youngsters show willingness in creating awareness among the public, then hopefully the sweet poison may one day fade away. Cigarette smoking causes various health problems. The future of our country depends on the younger generation and it is they who should be aware of the harmful effects of tobacco. Tobacco in any form is injurious to health and may cause mouth cancer, lung cancer and many other problems. The government must ban the sale of tobacco to every age group of people. Smoking in public areas must be avoided.

Our Government must take some measures to see that tobacco is not easily available in the market. Tobacco and other materials derived from tobacco should be banned. Let us come together and take a pledge that we will try our best to get rid of tobacco from this world. Rehabilitation centres also provide medical and emotional support to people who want to quit smoking.

Life is short, enjoy it without addiction. There is no way we will loose by giving up smoking and no way we will profit by continuing the habit. But what matters most is the will power to overcome the habit of smoking and chewing tobacco. So, start thinking about it today as it is been rightly said that “Where there is a will, there is a way...”!!!
