India 2020

The progress of India in every sphere is in the dreams of every individual who lives in this country. But did we ever think ever that what amount of contribution did we put forward to achieve the progress that we wanted??? Have we ever thought on this issue?

During India's 55th Republic Day celebration our former great president Dr A.P.J Abdul Kalam's delivered a speech about his vision for India towards 2020. He inspired us with his vision to make India a superpower by the year 2020. India 2020 depicts the Vision for the new millennium to be achieved by the year 2020. For more information on our president's inspirational speech just go through this article check it...

If I were given the power to be the Chairwoman of the planning commission then I would try to introduce best possible methods to tackle the problems that our nation is facing today. The area where I would focus on first is the illiteracy problem. Education plays a major role in shaping a country's future. 100% literacy and school education to be provided to the children who is the Country’s future. So corrective steps would be taken to improve the quality of basic compulsory education provided to the students in rural areas. Most of the people living in rural parts of India struggle with the public health care system as its minimal or non existant in the villages. Due to commercial gains the health care system is concentrating on cities and urbanized places. We have got world class hospitals with excellent doctors which attracts the millions of patients outside of the country. But we are not able to provide a basic health care system to our citizens. Steps would be introduced by the government along with the private health care institutions to provide a accessible public health care system to the rural people at free of cost. The strength of India lies in its Human Resources and our government responsibility is to take care of it well. Lets make India a healthy nation by 2020.

Secondly solid steps would be taken to improve the existing infrastructure and high level sanitation .. Instead of investing crores of Rupees in making infrastructure in Urban areas also invest in the commencing basic infrastructure in all villages as villages do play a core part in the development of the nation.

Again the corruption prevailing in the country should be handled at all levels. Apart from the above areas there are certain things that we need to give importance. One is the transparency in our political system like western countries. This will prevent the corruption which is hindering the growth of our country.

If all these can be achieved then we can build an India of our dreams come true……

A true Legend..... Kiran Bedi

India is a land of courage and heroism, there is no doubt in that. One such renowned icon of heroism and symbol of victory depicting the woman power is Kiran Bedi. She is the first Indian woman to join the Indian Police Services (IPS) in the year 1972. She was a real pride for the Indian police force.

Kiran Bedi was born on June 9, 1949 at Amritsar in Punjab. She completed her schooling from the Sacred Heart Convent School in Amritsar. Then she did her graduation in the English from the Government College for Women in Amritsar. She got her Masters degree in Political Science from Punjab University, Chandigarh. She continued her studies, even when she joined the Indian Police force. Finally In the year 1988, she obtained a degree in Law (LLB) from Delhi University.

In the year 1993 she was awarded the Ph. D degree by the Department of Social Sciences, the Indian Institute of Technology in New Delhi in which her research topic was Drug Abuse and Domestic Violence. She was an extraordinary academician, author, speaker, social activist and a sports champion and tennis being her favourite sport. In short she was an all rounder. She has won the championship of all-India and all-Asian tennis competition. When she was 22 years old, she even won the Asian Ladies Title.

She started her career in the year 1970 where she did the job of a lecturer at Khalsa College for Women in Amritsar. After 2 years, she joined the Indian Police Services. In her police career she took a huge number of challenging tasks. She was transferred to Tihar which was Asia’s most notorious jail where she transformed the vice-den into something like an ashram, introducing meditation and literacy programme. Due to great her Tihar work she was awarded the Magsaysay Award (also called the Asian Nobel Award) in the year 1994. She has also been the Lieutenant Governor of Chandigarh and Director General of Narcotics Control Bureau.

Kiran Bedi laid the foundation for the establishment of two voluntary organizations, namely, Navajyoti (1988) & India Vision Foundation (1994). These organizations were primarily set up with the aim of improving the living conditions of the drug addicts and the underprivileged people. For drug abuse prevention, her organization was presented with the Serge Soitiroff Memorial Award by the United Nations.

The effort of Kiran Bedi has paid and brought her worldwide recognition. Her works have always earned appreciation. For her outstanding work and services she won a lot of awards like President Gallantry Award in the year 1979, Mother Teresa Memorial National Award for Social Justice in the year 2005 etc. A documentary based on the life of her life of being India's first woman IPS officer titled Yes, Madam Sir produced by Australian film maker, Megan Doneman has won top awards at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.

She was last posted as Director General, BPR&D (Bureau of Police Research and Development, Ministry of Home Affairs) then she retired from IPS in December, 2007, after taking voluntary retirement.

According to me....

She is a true legend.....She is a symbol of pride and honour for the woman race. We should salute and respect such a personality who has put in her whole hearted effort in serving the society. Her actions and motivational speeches have inspired a lot of young girls to look forward Indian Police Services as a career choice. If today we are seeing lot of young girls entering Military and Police services, the true credit would definitely go to KIRAN BEDI.... the Woman with tremendous will power.

Stop Cruelty, Stop Factory Farming....

Factory farming is increasing in number from the last few decades. In these factory farms the animals are treated inhumanely. Freedom is a basic right for humans as well as for animals but here they are forced to live in small cages tightly together in a congested way to save space. The life of an animal in a factory farm is characterized by acute deprivation, stress, and disease.

Traditional family farms are being squeezed out of business by their inability to raise the capital to compete with huge factory farms. Moreover, local food processing industries also tend to disappear and be replaced by a few centralized units.

Why to put a stop on Factory Farming? ? ? ?

Food that comes from factory farms has no taste, is highly processed, is not nutritious and is often unhealthy. The animals are given antibiotics, hormones, and highly concentrated feed to accelerate growth and weight gain. This practice is not only harmful for the animals but also pose a huge lot of troubles to the people who consume them. The consumption of such meat causes many diseases such as pneumonia and other food-borne illness.

Factory farms produce huge quantities of excess animal waste, which are often stored in large pit holes or thrown to surrounding land thus contaminating air, land and even water causing a lot of harmful effects.

One of the most important objections to industrial farming is of an ethical nature. Even if all the environmental problems could be solved someway, still the manner in which the factory farming industry treats animals is unacceptable and sickening. Keeping as many animals as possible in a small space, without freedom of movement or the ability to express their natural behaviour is really unfriendly way.

Some of things we can do to an extend to stop animal killing and cruelty shown towards them are:

1. We can try to eliminate meat from our daily diet.
2. Write letters to higher officials to stop cruel factory farming practices.
3. We can donate money to animal rights organizations such as Farm Sanctuary.

It is not possible to guarantee the basic right to freedom for animals while industrial farming methods continue to be used. There is no animal welfare laws enforced that can protect the farm animals from these harsh and brutal treatments. As far as these animals are concerned they are continued to be treated in an unfriendly manner. Factory farms affect the environment, human health and employment. We need strong measures to prevent them.

The Video below depicts the cruelty of factory farming towards the poor animals, its really painful.....

On the other hand, it also shows sustainable family farming should be promoted: allowing small farmers who produce good and sustainable food to make a fair living from their job is the best way to stop factory farming to some extent.

Have a close watch to it....... its really shocking and unbeleivable...

Eve-Teasing.... a Social Crime

Eve-teasing is a social evil that the women folk are facing today. It violates the basic right of a woman to live in dignity. It really makes the life of the young girls miserable. There are so many cases of Eve-teasing happening all over the country.

Take in case of in the crowded bus girls are pinched, pushed and insulted. While in road they are commented, chased and whistled upon. Even obscene remarks are passed on them. In this man dominated world majority of women is tolerating all these evils patiently as raising their voice may result in various adverse effects....

This eve-teasing is a crime which is not taken so seriously by the police or authorities. . Women are afraid to bring such complaints to the notice of the police because these eve-teasers are not properly punished. Its really horrible to say that Eve-teasing is something that the Indian women is facing in her everyday life....

What can be done to put a stop to this Social evil ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

As far as eve teasing is concerned, the Indian women are doing nothing regarding this... They just ignore the eve teaser... Do they have to stop at that because they are the weaker sex? I think they need to stand up for their rights and do something about it. But that rarely happens, and all that they do is sit at home and do nothing, while other girls are being harassed outside at the same time. Steps must be taken that would make eve-teasers shudder the next time they think about teasing a girl. Parents should encourage their daughters to face the world with courage and not to fear or bother about the minor incidents.

Instead of just complaining, some action should be taken wisely.... This is a problem that needs to be solved by society and this can be done by educating them at a young age.

Some other preventive measures that i think could be taken to stop eve-teasing to some extend are:

1.The Parents should educate their boys to respect the girl community.

2.Girls should stop wearing provoking outfits like mini skirts, mini tops, tight jeans etc which would portray vulgar looks . Its better to wear traditional attaires.

3.Girls should avoid going out alone without the company of a relative or parent or any friend mainly during the night times.

At the same time, there should be strict rules and those involved in the eve teasing should be punished/fined.

The Indian government has already passed many laws against eve teasing. The main issue is in educating Indians about gender equality and the rights of women. Public awareness should be spread against the ill-effects of eve-teasing....

The ad video below depicts how an old man comes forward to rescue a young girl who is being teased... Likewise its time for each and every citizen to Raise our voice against this social evil and Act accordingly....

Say NO to Smoking....

Why Smoking Kills

All of us are aware of the harmful effects of smoking on our health and the environment around us. Each and every part of our body gets affected by smoking. In very simple words we can say that smokers are pushing themselves to death. Smoking produces 4,000 poisonous substances. When inhaled, they cut down the oxygen supply to the heart thereby damaging the circulatory and the respiratory system. Nicotine, is an addictive drug which is present in cigarette.

“Cigarette Smoking Is Injurious to Health” This is a common line that we can see on every cigarette packet which indicates that its harmful but still we continue using it. It not only causes pollution but causes health hazards too. It is one of the main cause many harmful diseases. The smoke of a burning cigarette is really very dangerous. Not only the smoker is in danger but the other person who is standing nearby him inhaling the smoke is also at the same risk. This is called Passive Smoking which is also known called Second hand smoking. This is more harmful than the Active smoking ( the person who smokes himself). Smoking of any kind whether active or passive, it is always better to avoid smoking altogether.

Now a days not only men, even women seem to be addicted to smoking. According to the WHO's 14th World Conference on Tobacco and Health, 2009, there has been an alarming 18 per cent rise in the number of women smokers in India. It is suspected that every eight seconds, someone in the world dies due to tobacco use. Every cigarette smoked cuts at least five minutes of life on average about the time taken to smoke it.

Effects of Smoking

Smoking is a prime factor in causing heart disease, stroke, chronic lung disease, tuberculosis. It can even cause cancer of the lungs, larynx, esophagus, mouth, and bladder, kidneys. It has harmful effects like cough, headache, soreness of throat, dizziness, irritation in eyes, bad breath, yellow teeth, wrinkles.

The main risk of passive smoking is to small kids, lungs, heart, brain, pregnant ladies and their inborn baby also. Smoking should not be done at the time of pregnancy as it may cause side effects to the babies with malformations and low birth weight.

Tobacco is Injurious to Health

Recent studies has showed that Tobacco is very injurious for health. Chewing tobacco leads to mouth cancer. People now-a-days opt to smoke cigarettes in order to fight stress. Tobacco is a poison, which kills slowly and steadily. Every year, smoking kills more than 276,000 men and 142,000 women. Anti Tobacco Day is celebrated throughout the world on May 31st to create awareness about the harmful effects of chewing tobacco. Tobacco is an addiction, which destroys our young generation, thus spoiling the future of our country. It causes many harmful diseases and is very injurious to health.

If youngsters show willingness in creating awareness among the public, then hopefully the sweet poison may one day fade away. Cigarette smoking causes various health problems. The future of our country depends on the younger generation and it is they who should be aware of the harmful effects of tobacco. Tobacco in any form is injurious to health and may cause mouth cancer, lung cancer and many other problems. The government must ban the sale of tobacco to every age group of people. Smoking in public areas must be avoided.

Our Government must take some measures to see that tobacco is not easily available in the market. Tobacco and other materials derived from tobacco should be banned. Let us come together and take a pledge that we will try our best to get rid of tobacco from this world. Rehabilitation centres also provide medical and emotional support to people who want to quit smoking.

Life is short, enjoy it without addiction. There is no way we will loose by giving up smoking and no way we will profit by continuing the habit. But what matters most is the will power to overcome the habit of smoking and chewing tobacco. So, start thinking about it today as it is been rightly said that “Where there is a will, there is a way...”!!!

Save Food, Save Life

Chicken Ala Carte is a very inspiring short film directed by Ferdinand Dimadura in the year 2005 that perfectly depicts hunger and poverty brought about by Globalization. I was very moved by this video. It really shows how we sometimes take our lives for granted and that the world is a place that really needs our help.

When we look through deeply we understand that food could be the very precious thing that people need to survive. About 25,000 people die every day of hunger or hunger-related causes. This is one person every three and a half seconds, and unfortunately, it is children who die most often.

There is plenty of food in the world for everyone. The problem is that hungry people are trapped in severe poverty. They lack the money to buy enough food to nourish themselves. Being constantly malnourished, they become weaker and often sick. This makes them increasingly less able to work also, which then makes them even poorer and hungrier and ultimately leading to death.

I know that there's a lot people out there in the world who’s starving every day. This video is really touching... at the same time my heart is also got hurt watching the reality that they eat the leftover food and yet thanking god for it.. Quite Surprising but yet so real…. !!!

We, who live in the developed countries, often complain a lot about the taste of the food, the look of the food presentation, and just the smell of the food served. We should be rather thankful to God Almighty who have blessed us with enough fortunes. We have never faced the trouble in getting food to survive. Still we are wasting food in a reckless manner without just thinking of the weaker sections of the society who are starving for food. The main inspiring point in that short film was that it could clearly depict the hope and spirituality that never left these people (mainly children).

If we ask ourselves, we may get the answer as, ” We can’t do anything for these children.” Instead, I would say we must change our perspective. Rather we should say in unity that ,” Let us appreciate every gifts from God, hold each other hand and share love with people around us and help society in some way or the other...”

So next time when You waste food do “ Think and then Act” as action speaks more than words....!!!

Come on Lead India....

Lead India is a good initiative - to try and highlight the critical need of able leadership in India. It is pretty evident that our political process has failed in identifying, grooming or mentoring the kind of leadership that we need in India.

It can be assumed as a kind of pilot project being funded with lot of money and publicity. Its quite a true fact that we can’t create leaders out of sms-poll shows but what's wrong in trying something new. Everyone knows that middle-class clearly runs away from politics no matter how much it might lament over corrupt politicians. However, I'd just like to say that, what else is the kind of initiative we would propose to bring the middle-class youths come out of their shells to be part of political decision making process of India?

Times of India, ToI being a press of a democratic nation, this is what is expected out of them: to create awareness about the system, to spread the message to every nook and corner of the country, and yet they are going a step further, bringing out young leaders or at least providing a platform for someone who is willing to serve genuinely. And according to me it’s really a great thing. At least, this show can bring the issue of leadership to the people - what our leaders promise to us and what we get in return.
I wouldn't really support the ToI campaign in all factors but I still would like to put stress on the fact that it was an inspiration to all of us and it did generate the remarkable awareness. I do agree that one of the motive behind the campaign may be to boost up its sales but it should not matter to all of us as far as they are doing it for a good cause.

Just consider the case of we Indians ; Better than sitting around complaining about the Government which we all do, we ourselves doing nothing to improve one's own environment! Something we as Indian citizens are all guilty of somewhere or the other...

We are as responsible for bad or good governance as the Government is. Isn't a Democracy is a Government OF the people , BY the people, FOR the people??? We won our freedom through a discipline that we have now abandoned. Freedom was won at such a great price, a price we pay even today. Yet to be truly free is to set limitations on indulgence. The videos are really justifying the facts that every Indian must come forward and ACT…

Gandhiji said "Be the Change". We may or may not fully subscribe to his methods or agree with his political views, but it is important to remember we all have aresponsiblity towards our governance and our country. It is, after all for us all. Some action is better than none!!!

Thus according to me the campaign that Times of India carried out is at least provided us a few energetic, enthusiastic, willing to do work people, even though it fails to provide a pan india leader, it is at least a starting, a boost to all of those out there doing work selflessly.
